IELTS Exam Format: What to Expect
A plain-English walkthrough of the four sections, timing, and scoring.
- 1
The Four Sections
IELTS has four sections, taken in this order: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Listening, Reading and Writing are usually completed back-to-back on the same day; Speaking may be on the same day or up to a week before/after, depending on the test centre.
- 2
Timing
Listening runs about 30 minutes plus 10 minutes to transfer answers. Reading is 60 minutes for 40 questions. Writing is 60 minutes split across two tasks (roughly 20 minutes for Task 1, 40 for Task 2). Speaking is a face-to-face interview lasting 11-14 minutes.
- 3
Academic vs. General Training
Listening and Speaking are identical in both versions. Reading and Writing differ: Academic uses longer, more complex passages and an analytical Task 1 (describing a chart/graph/diagram), while General Training uses everyday-context passages and a Task 1 letter-writing exercise.

Scoring
Each section is scored on the same 1-9 band scale, and the four section scores are averaged (rounded to the nearest 0.5) for an Overall Band Score. There's no pass/fail — different universities, employers and immigration programs set their own minimum band requirements.
